How to turn a webinar into short clips

Published · 5 min read

To turn a webinar into clips, export the recording as MP4 (Zoom, Teams or Meet), spot the passages that stand on their own (an answer in the Q&A, a number, a short demo, an objection handled), cut them between 20 and 100 seconds, caption them and export one format per network: 1:1 or 4:5 for LinkedIn, 16:9 for YouTube, 9:16 for Reels, Shorts and TikTok. With an AI clipping tool like ClipOnIt, AI suggests about ten moments scored out of 100 with the reason for each pick; a webinar of an hour or more works on paid plans, which have no length limit (from $29/month).

Why cut a webinar into clips?

A webinar is watched live by registrants, then hardly ever again. A one-hour replay is rarely watched to the end, yet its best minutes often answer the exact questions your prospects have. Cutting it into short clips makes the same content work for weeks: one clip per working day on LinkedIn, a few as Shorts, an excerpt in the follow-up to registrants who missed it.

Which webinar passages make good clips?

Type of passageWhy it worksSuggested format
An answer to an audience questionThe question is the hook, the answer fits in a minute1:1 or 4:5 (LinkedIn), 9:16
A number or a customer resultConcrete, quotable, makes sense without context1:1, 4:5
An objection handled ("too expensive", "no time")Speaks directly to the prospect's hesitation4:5, 16:9
A short feature demoShows instead of tells; keep the screen readable16:9 (YouTube, website)
A strong opinion from the speakerGets reactions, so comments9:16, 4:5

Skip: the intro ("we're waiting for a few more people"), passages that refer to a slide you cannot see, and attendee questions where their name or face shows without consent.

The 5-step method

  1. Get the file. Download the MP4 recording from Zoom, Teams or Meet. Prefer the "active speaker" view over the gallery: reframing will be cleaner.
  2. Find the moments. By hand, read the transcript and mark the passages in the table above. With ClipOnIt, AI suggests the moments, each with a score out of 100 and one sentence explaining the pick; you can also ask for a specific passage by describing it ("the question about pricing").
  3. Cut on sentences. A clip starts on the first useful sentence and ends on a complete one. Remove silences and opening "umms".
  4. Caption. Word by word for 9:16, more restrained for LinkedIn (outline or minimal style). See how to add automatic subtitles.
  5. Export one edit per network. The same passage in 4:5 for LinkedIn and 9:16 for Shorts, with framing specific to each format.

How many clips to post, and how often?

Keep the best, not all of them: five strong clips beat a dozen average ones. Spread them over two to three weeks rather than the same day, and link each clip to the full replay or to registration for the next webinar. Lengths and formats that work per platform are in short video length and format in 2026; the same logic applied to a podcast is in how to turn a 1-hour podcast into 10 shorts.

FAQ

My webinar is over an hour long, will it work?

Yes on ClipOnIt's paid plans, which have no length limit per video, only a maximum file size (8 GB on Starter, 20 GB on Pro and Business). The free plan accepts 20 minutes max.

Do I need attendees' consent?

If an attendee is on screen or named, ask before posting, or pick passages where only the speaker talks. Announce at the start of the webinar that the recording will be reused.

Which format for LinkedIn?

1:1 or 4:5, which take more room in the feed than a 16:9 video, with restrained captions.

Can I keep the slides visible?

Yes in 16:9, which keeps the shared screen. In 9:16, reframing follows whoever is speaking: pick passages where the speaker explains without relying on the slide.

Can I automate clipping for every webinar?

Yes, through the API or the MCP server, included from Starter: import, moment picking and export can be driven from a script, ChatGPT or Claude.
